Frederick Douglass Elementary School: Proficiency Levels Soar!

OCYC is a proud supporter of Frederick Douglass Elementary School – Home of the Lions and are excited to spotlight their inspiring news about their students as shared by their Transformation Reading Coach Emmanuela Louis. This Overtown educational institution is committed to providing a high-quality, well-rounded education that prepares students for success in the future. We believe that strong partnerships between home, school, and community are essential for the academic and social growth of our young scholars.

Reading Proficiency

We have seen a significant increase in reading proficiency across all grade levels. Our recent assessments indicate that more students are meeting and exceeding grade-level expectations. This improvement is a testament to the innovative teaching strategies our educators have implemented, including targeted reading interventions and engaging literacy programs. Our overall proficiency is 51%. 

Many of our students have also embraced independent reading, and the increased access to diverse and high-interest books has played a crucial role in fostering a love for reading. We encourage families to continue supporting this growth at home by providing opportunities for reading together and discussing books.

Math Proficiency

Similarly, our math programs have yielded remarkable results over 70%. Students are demonstrating a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. Our focus on hands-on learning and real-world applications has made math more relevant and engaging. As a result, we have witnessed an increase in confidence among our students when tackling challenging math problems.

Our educators have also utilized data-driven instruction, allowing us to tailor support to meet the needs of each learner. This personalized approach has proven effective in boosting proficiency rates and fostering a growth mindset.
