OCYC Youth Commission
The Overtown Children & Youth Coalition’s Youth Commission Program is designed to empower the youth of Overtown to take responsibility for self and community. The program will include leadership development in the form of annual retreats and community organizing, mentorship in the form of academic tutoring, one-on-one check-ins, workshops, and guest speakers, and skill-building in the form of piloting collective impact projects.

The program will include leadership development in the form of annual retreats and community organizing, mentorship in the form of academic tutoring, one-on-one check-ins, workshops, and guest speakers, and skill-building in the form of piloting collective impact projects.
Requirements:
Must be between the ages of 14 to 18 years old
Nomination form completed by OCYC Member Organization
Must be an Overtown resident or participate in a member organization operating out of Overtown
Must submit a résumé and high school transcript (before the interview)
Must complete essay questions (minimum 200 words per question)
Must attend an orientation session (with parents, if under 18)
Must commit to a full 10-month program to qualify for an OCYC scholarship (80% Attendance, minimum of 10 hours a month). This includes attending scheduled sessions - including two (2) weekly meetings, one (1) community volunteer event per month, and possible retreat
Must attend a scheduled interview
Note: Preference will be given to applicants enrolled in an OCYC Member Organization

Upon completion of the program year, Commissioners will qualify for a scholarship to assist with the next school year supplies
Exposure to field trips, mentorship, and opportunities to gain leadership and assorted skill sets

You can apply starting August 19th until September 19, 2019
Please be ready to answer the following questions in a minimum of 200 words each:
1. Why do you want to be a Youth Commissioner? What is something unique about yourself that you want to bring to the Youth Commission?
2. What are some issues that affect you or your community? If you had a meeting with the Mayor or Commissioner tomorrow, what would you talk about with them and advise them on?
3. What are some past accomplishments that you are proud of?
4. What other commitments do you have during the school year and in what ways are you prepared to dedicate time to meet the Commission’s goals?
5. What do you hope to learn while being on the Youth Commission?

OCYC’s Youth Commission is open to youth between the ages of 14 to 18 years old that live in or participate in an OCYC’s member organization. You know your youth the best, and your insight will help in our selection process. Please be ready to answer the following questions for each youth you are nominating for the program:
1. How long have you known this participant?
2. How active are they in your program?
3. What do you think their most exceptional quality is?
4. Why do you recommend them to be a Youth Commissioner for OCYC?
